In honor of Men's Health Month this June, we want to celebrate all the incredible men out there and take a moment to reflect on what it means to be a godly man. Pastor Brandon shared an encouraging message on Father’s Day, focusing on Psalm 1:1-3 (NKJV), which paints a beautiful picture of the godly man. Let's dive into this scripture and discover the characteristics that define a man who walks in the ways of the Lord.
Psalm 1:1-3 (NKJV): “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”
Today, I want to encourage all the men, especially on this Father’s Day, to be the godly man described in Psalm 1. Let's break down the key points of this powerful scripture.
1. The Godly Man Does Not Parade Around with the Ungodly
Psalm 1:1 sets the stage by highlighting what a godly man avoids: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.” This verse shows the progression of sin—walking, standing, and then sitting with the wrong company can lead one deeper into ungodly behavior.
Remember, 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV) warns us: “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.’” Similarly, Proverbs 4:14-15 (NKJV) advises: “Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on.” By steering clear of negative influences, a godly man safeguards his path and sets himself up for divine blessings.
2. The Godly Man Takes Delight in the Counsel of God and Prioritizes It Above All Else
Psalm 1:2 (NKJV) emphasizes the joy and priority the godly man places on God’s Word: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” This is not about a sense of duty, but a heartfelt delight and constant meditation on God’s teachings.
Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) echoes this sentiment: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Additionally, Psalm 119:97 (NKJV) proclaims: “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” When we prioritize God’s counsel, our lives align with His divine wisdom and guidance.
3. The Godly Man Is Rooted in His Faith Because He Delights in God
Psalm 1:3 (NKJV) provides a beautiful analogy of the stability and fruitfulness that come from being deeply rooted in God: “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” A godly man is nourished by the constant flow of God’s Word and presence, leading to a fruitful and prosperous life.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NKJV) reinforces this imagery: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” And Colossians 2:6-7 (NKJV) reminds us: “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
During June Men's Health Month, let's celebrate and strive to be the godly men described in Psalm 1. May we avoid ungodly influences, delight in God’s Word, and remain firmly rooted in our faith, bearing fruit and prospering in all we do. Happy Men's Health Month to all the men who embody these godly qualities!
